The wolf boy sniffed the musky air of the city. He immediately regretted it. How the hell did humans breathe this stuff?! He gagged, but kept moving. 'Better find Bernard soon. I'll die from this air. That or dog catchers.' He thought to himself. He pulled the hood of his sweater, making sure no one in the city of Solstice could see his ears.
It was rather hard to see in the dimly lit city streets. That was saying something, really, being a wolf blood and all. A wolf blood was hated by humans, even the keepers. Keepers were people who had animals to help guide their way, most of them being depressed loners. Like Asriel himself. But wolf bloods were only half humans. If you were half bat, you were a bat blood. If you were half lizard, you were a lizard blood. If you were part leopard you were a leopard-blood. Heck, a close friend of his was a leopard, Julian. Back home, where there were forests for miles. Man, he missed those forests.
Though he couldn't think about it now. He was a wolf warrior. He had bigger duties. Bigger responsibilities. In the city streets. Protecting keepers.
He always questioned 'why?', though. Why protect people who hated them? Wolf bloods were chased out of the city when Asriel was younger. Honestly, humans hated wolf bloods, and he wasn't about to forget his brother's first encounter with a keeper. Before that, humans seemed fine. Then, after the deaths, he began to manifest a deep hatred for humans. But now, in this time, he was forced to come to the wretched creature's aid.
"Asriel! Get over here boy!" Bernard's low voice barked. Asriel rushed over to the alley way. Bernard was a tall, large, muscular greying wolf blood, with several scars over his face and body. Beside him was his nephew, Raphael, but was called Rafé for short. Rafé was blonde and pale and short and a bit scrawny, qualities that were harshly discouraged. Luckily for him, he made up for it with incredible strength and speed. "I was wondering when you would get here, Comrade." Rafé said. "They come nearer, and it's time to fight Them." He was referring to Them, a demon that was a great legend to Mysteria, a nightmare come to life. No one knew its actual name, or gender. So, wolf bloods referred to it as Them, or They.
Before Asriel had a chance to respond, he heard a laugh. A demon cackle. "Them...." Rafé whispered with hatred. Them was the reason he was with his uncle. Them..... Killed Rafé's parents right before his eyes.
Them's eyes shone like burning embers. "Hello wolf bloods. I'm glad you're here. Especially you Rafé. I needed a snack." Them cackled.
He pounced, fast as a serpent, sending a burst of dark energy their way. Rafé and Asriel blocked it, along with Bernard, using his own spark to shield the trio. Asriel drew his sword, and slashed Them. Them was barely fazed by the blow, turned to Rafé and went for the kill. Asriel was frozen in place.
But Bernard was not. He got in front of Rafé protectively. He was hit at the heart. He fell to his knees in pain. His Last breaths were being breathed, and death was beckoning him. Rafé ran to his uncle. "Uncle Bernard....not you too...." He sniffled.
Bernard weakly smiled. "It..... is time for......a new pack. Gather keepers.....teach them our ways....you two are the wolf blood's last hope..."
Asriel put a hand on his leader's heart. It's beat was slowly fading. When it finally faded out Rafé looked at Asriel with sad, but determined eyes. "We will grant his final wish. We must leave. To find the keepers. Whether they like it or not."
Asriel nodded. They went their separate ways.
Both Not knowing if they'd even find these so called keepers.
Or if the keepers would even accept them as equals.
